GET HARD | Review

I mean there are a lot of things that you could say go right in a movie, but isn’t it so much more fun to say what went wrong?

GET HARD - TLC

I watched Get Hard over the weekend and I went into it with an already negative outlook – I love Kevin Hart, but sometimes I feel he is a little too over the top in movies – just like I really think he must be in real life, actually – as you can probably tell, I hate Real Husbands of Hollywood. I am generally not a Will Ferrel fan (but he KILLS it on Jimmy Kimmel’s lip sync battles, ROTFL). The title of the movie was a cliché boring slapstick-indicating on-th-nose type name – ooooh, go to prison, so get hard, but also prison is hard, but also people will be getting hard for you. Yawn. (but kids, don’t do drugs. Don’t go to prison. Stay in school.)

But…this movie was actually preeeetty freaking hilarious. I laughed out loud a good number of times during it and was pleasantly surprised by that. The only things I thought wrong with this movie were the title (yech. So unimaginative. So boring.) and the obvious plotholes.

GET HARD

In movies that are trying to be funny, sometimes, I find, they don’t really concentrate on the plot too much. There tend to be huge gaping plotholes and and since we are too busy laughing, you don’t notice. But when you’re not laughing, it makes the movie (and potentially awful acting) that much worse (because timing and acting is everything in a comedy, no?) There were the usual plotholes in this one – the main one being the big question about why they didn’t jut do at the end what they could have done in the beginning. But I suppose there would have been no movie.

Also…I know it is a movie about going to prison. And I know people think rape jokes are funny. And I know comedians are supposed to be able to (and do) make fun of anything and everything, and that’s a concept I am struggling to deal with.

GET HARD - Dare You not to Laugh

Because rape jokes aren’t funny guys. Whether you’re talking about an exam doing you without a rubber up the arse or going to prison. I was over the rapey rape molesty creepy jokes. Meh. BOOOOOO.

So for me, the movie gets a solid 6 and a half. Ok, nah. It was actually really, really entertaining, additionally because T. I. is in it and thank the Lord his acting is getting better (anyone remember Takers? Yech). So…a 7. Yeah, I said it. Go Get Hard or go home!
