WHITE HOUSE DOWN vs OLYMPUS HAS FALLEN: Same Storyline Face Off

Published

on

Hollywood is at it again; hitting from all corners with the same script/plot as the basis of two separate films, headlined by reputable weighty onscreen names. This year, we count a minimum of 4 films that share the same fabric in terms of general storyline;

After Earth the real-life and onscreen father and son duo of Will and Jaden Smith headline this film that is similar in plot to Tom Cruise’s and Morgan Freeman’s Oblivion. Both films are sci-fi in nature and showcase a futuristic desolate earth as a result of cataclysmic events, with two to few human survivors (After Earth and Oblivion respectively).  If you ask us for our opinion, Oblivion looks the more solid and diverse of the two, but that’s a post for another day…

The other two films competing despite being cast in outright similar moulds are Olympus Has Fallen starring Gerard Butler, Aaron Eckhart and Morgan Freeman (hold on, he appears again hmmm…); and White House Down starring Channing Tatum, Jamie Foxx as the President and Maggie Gyllenhaal. The trailer to Olypmus Has Fallen has been online for a while now, while White House Down‘s trailer premiered today.

We have attached them below, with a general outline of each film’s plot, we leave it upto you to make up your mind on what looks the more solid and intriguing offering of the two. We”ll give our’s at the end 🙂

White House Down

Roland Emmerich, the director behind Independence Day, The Day After Tomorrow to name a few helms this blockbuster headlined by Channing Tatum and Django– err Jamie Foxx.

Plot: While on a tour of the White House with his young daughter, a police officer (Channing Tatum) springs into action to protect his child and the president (Jamie Foxx) from a heavily armed group of paramilitary invaders.

In theaters: June 28, 2013
Director: Roland Emmerich
Writer: James Vanderbilt (screenplay)
Stars: Channing Tatum, Jamie Foxx, Maggie Gyllenhaal

Olympus Has Fallen

Training Day director, Antoine Fuqua not only has a stellar cast consisting of Morgan Freeman, Gerard Butler and Aaron Eckhart at his disposal, but also explosions 😉

Plot: When the White House (Secret Service Code: “Olympus”) is captured by a terrorist mastermind and the President is kidnapped, disgraced former Presidential guard Mike Banning finds himself trapped within the building. As our national security team scrambles to respond, they are forced to rely on Banning¹s inside knowledge to help retake the White House, save the President, and avert an even bigger crisis. Antoine Fuqua (Training Day) directs an all-star cast featuring Gerard Butler, Aaron Eckhart, Morgan Freeman, Angela Bassett, Melissa Leo, Ashley Judd and Rick Yune.

Our Verdict:

White House Down, from the look and feel of the trailer alone; the artistic blend of spoiled footage transition effects, to the disaster tone well emphasized, not to mention some slick scenes, (how about that limo flipping over into the pool huh?) may come out the stronger of the two. Olympus Has Fallen has to some great extent, been to direct and obvious with the its first trailer; action, guns, renegade/disgraced soldier has to save the day and nation.  Granted both films offer nothing new, and may not exactly be humongous draws at the Box Office, but White House Down has kept it’s cards close to the chest. Olympus Has Fallen may have similar plot twists as Salt did… deception from within.

What say you?
