#Total Recall

Remakes and reboots are to most, an unfortunate trend. If you were to lift the number of fails in one hand, and success stories in the other, on what side would you slant more…?  Before any remake can actually prove itself worthy, it has to go through what i deem to be three important stages:

1. Mention Stage: This is where the announcement is made.  The announcement of an approved remake/reboot is bound to be met with varied fan reaction and criticism.  Generally negative given the history.

2. Marketing Stage: This is where we are bombarded with clips, images, teasers, posters, featurettes, info, news, TV Spots, trailers which at times serve their purpose well and win over a few hesitant critiques.

3. Day of Reckoning Stage: This is when the movie actually gets showcased in cinemas worldwide and the Box Office figures tell the story.  Either sad or a triumphant one.  Sad story means we were all right in the beginning; the piece of work should never have been picked of the shelf (or hall of fame) dusted and twisted and screwed to fit into the minds of today’s audience.  Triumphant story means that for some reason, people liked it! And lo and behold, we will be getting more sequels down the line unless MORE THAN ONE sequel bomb.

Total Recall is one reboot currently at Stage 2; Marketing.  Arnold Schwarzenegger was the main star way back in 1990 when it first came out, and so far we’ve seen one trailer, poster, viral posters, stills and today, we have its second trailer…

To be honest, the casting, the action and scenery make me hope this movie actually does soar 🙂 If you’re not familiar with Total Recall at all, here’s the official synopsis for the reboot:

Synopsis: Total Recall is an action thriller about reality and memory, inspired anew by the famous short story “We Can Remember It For You Wholesale” by Philip K. Dick. Welcome to Rekall, the company that can turn your dreams into real memories. For a factory worker named Douglas Quaid (Colin Farrell), even though he’s got a beautiful wife (Kate Beckinsale) who he loves, the mind-trip sounds like the perfect vacation from his frustrating life – real memories of life as a super-spy might be just what he needs. But when the procedure goes horribly wrong, Quaid becomes a hunted man. Finding himself on the run from the police – controlled by Chancellor Cohaagen (Bryan Cranston), the leader of the free world – Quaid teams up with a rebel fighter (Jessica Biel) to find the head of the underground resistance (Bill Nighy) and stop Cohaagen. The line between fantasy and reality gets blurred and the fate of his world hangs in the balance as Quaid discovers his true identity, his true love, and his true fate.”

#Spike Lee’s RED HOOK SUMMER

August has the reboot Total Recall, hyper-macho sequel Expendables 2, and the spin-off/tie-in The Bourne Legacy all lined up to hit you from left, right and center.  Veering away from fists, explosions and man-hunts that generally define the three aforementioned flicks;-) we shift our attention to a Spike Lee production set to debut on August 10th, 2012; Red Hook Summer.  Here’s the trailer…

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=9CX9xKczh4w]

Synopsis: “The latest in Spike Lee’s Chronicles of Brooklyn anthology–which also includes “She’s Gotta Have It” (1986), “Do The Right Thing” (1989), “Crooklyn” (1994), “Clockers” (1995), and “He Got Game” (1998)–RED HOOK SUMMER tells the story of Flik Royale (Jules Brown), a sullen young boy from middle-class Atlanta who has come to spend the summer with his deeply religious grandfather, Bishop Enoch Rouse (Clarke Peters), in the housing projects of Red Hook. Having never met before, things quickly get off on the wrong foot as Bishop Enoch relentlessly attempts to convert Flik into a follower of Jesus Christ. Between his grandfather’s constant preaching and the culture shock of inner-city life, Flik’s summer appears to be a total disaster–until he meets Chazz Morningstar (Toni Lysaith), a pretty girl his age, who shows Flik the brighter side of Brooklyn. Through her love and the love of his grandfather, Flik begins to realize that the world is a lot bigger, and perhaps a lot better, than he’d ever imagined.”

#Looper

Prometheus was one highly anticipated Sc-Fi flick of 2012, Total Recall is also putting its hand up, BUT if you ask me (please do because I’m answering anyway 😉 ) Looper looks set to take the crown in the sci-fi/action department.  Why? Well the unique plot alone stands above even the casting itself.  See for yourself buddy, and oh, you might want to listen very carefully to the narration as the trailer starts ;-)…

Synopsis: “In the futuristic action thriller Looper, time travel will be invented – but it will be illegal and only available on the black market. When the mob wants to get rid of someone, they will send their target 30 years into the past, where a “looper” – a hired gun, like Joe (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) – is waiting to mop up. Joe is getting rich and life is good… until the day the mob decides to “close the loop,” sending back Joe’s future self (Bruce Willis) for assassination. The film is written and directed by Rian Johnson and also stars Emily Blunt, Paul Dano, and Jeff Daniels. Ram Bergman and James D. Stern produce.

Opening Date: September 28th, 2012
