SUMMER 2013 | Box Office Wrap Up
The ripple effects of the USA’s summer period is felt around the world in a few ways, one of the major ways are the slate of high-budget action/fantasy and superhero themed movies that are dished out in that period. With that in mind, it makes sense that this period is when Hollywood spends the largest amount of money when it comes to productions and marketing of those projects.
The expectation is quite high during this period from both sides of the equation; what with demand for great entertaining story, characters and cast… Inevitably at the end of the day (or season in this case 😉 ) one expectation speaks louder than the others; Box Office results. With that, here are the top ten highest grossing films of the summer period:
Title | Domestic Total | US Opening | Worldwide* | |
1. | Iron Man 3 | $408,800,000 | $174,144,000 | $1.214 billion |
2. | Despicable Me 2 | $355,662,000 | $83,517,000 | $823.1 |
3. | Man of Steel | $290,327,000 | $116,619,000 | $657.3 |
4. | Monsters University | $263,478,000 | $82,429,000 | $715.1 |
5. | Fast & Furious 6 | $238,660,000 | $97,375,000 | $787.4 |
6. | Star Trek Into Darkness | $228,261,000 | $70,165,000 | $462.4 |
7. | World War Z | $200,265,000 | $66,411,000 | $532.2 |
8. | The Heat | $157,416,000 | $39,115,000 | $214.6 |
9. | The Great Gatsby | $144,840,000 | $50,085,000 | $331 |
10. | The Conjuring | $134,157,000 | $41,855,000 | $243.6 |
This happened to be the season for horror flicks, with The Comjuring doing way much better than expected and getting good reviews edging out certain surprise flops such as The Hangover 3. Speaking of flops, The Lone Ranger, Will Smith branded After Earth, the Ryan Reynolds and Jeff Bridges helmed comic book adaptation R.I.P.D, and the Jamie Foxx, Channing Tatum bromance themed White House Down had size-able budgets but failed miserably at the Box Office and also review wise.
Just to paint the picture for you with figures; R.I.P.D had a budget of $64 Million but has currently only made back $64.6 Million globally. With 2013’s summer account closed, we now look ahead to 2014 with the sole purpose of predicting 2015. What do we mean? Incase you missed it, 2014 sees high profile and high budget films enter their production stages aiming for a 2015 release. Films such as the next James Bond film, Avengers sequel titled Avengers: Age of Ultron, and the Batman vs Superman team up. So get back to biting those nails people, the cycle continues! In honor of the hits and misses this season, here’s a trailer montage of those flicks, enjoy:
